One of the easiest ways to refresh your interior is to simply change the rug. Yes painting the walls can change the look dramatically but it involves all the preparation, time and effect – and do you want to be doing that during winter months? So changing your rug is a quick fix, roll up your old rug, lay down the new one, an interior transformed. If your budget allows we often recommend different rugs for different seasons.
To help you get ready for the next few months we have chosen five of our favourite rugs under £500 that will add colour or texture to your home through autumn and winter.
Louis de Poorterre
First up in our favourite five is this burst of colour from Louis de Poorterre. We recently used this rug for a project in Whitstable to add some colour to a kitchen.
Part of the Sari collection the style of this rug is inspired by Indian rugs made from the sari silk leftover. It comes in four different colourways, the More Sandalwood version here is perfect for autumn colour.
The smallest size in this rug 140x200cm is around £400, but it does go right up to a 290x390cm whopper if you’ve fallen in love with the colours. We always use Floor Story to supply Louis de Poorterre rugs – have a look at their website to explore the range.
Rocket St George
If Sheepskin is your thing Rocket St George have a great range online. I really love this style of rug, it’s very natural and great for winter months. We once bought one home from the Ice Hotel (I think it was actually reindeer skin) many years ago and it sat in front of our fireplace.
At only £95 this is a bargain and so versatile as it can be used as a rug or slung over a chair as shown for decoration – upping the cosy quota.
The rug is genuine sheepskin – it comes from Icelandic sheep so very importantly it is sustainable. Living in a tough condition the wool of these sheep stays soft, has no odour and will keep it’s shape over time. So this rug will last you for many winters ahead.
Who said rugs have to be large and rectangular? Our third choice on autumn rugs is a small circular rug from La Redoute.
It features warm tonal shades with lots of colours you could pick up on for your interior – ochre, grey, blue and black are in the colour mix.
This would be a good choice to include near your favourite armchair as shown here. With a diameter of 100cm and priced at just £35 its a no brainer for adding some pattern and colour into your home. If you aren’t a circular rug fan head online to explore different sizing options – the runner would really enhance any hallway.
For affordable home decor we had to include a rug from the high street favourite Dunelm.
The Luxe Border rug is £329 and measures 160x230cm. It includes an interesting border and tassel feature on both ends.
You can buy the rug in 3 colourways, the Ochre one is my favourite due to the intensity of the colour. Autumn and Winter are not a time for dull colours, try to include bright warm shades. You can also see the rug online in Blush and Grey. If you are don’t want the impact of this ochre rug the grey one does use the same colour for border and tassel detail.
It’s the final choice in our selection but for absolute lushness this rug from H&M Home really takes some beating. The deep pile would be wonderful for sinking your feet in on cold nights.
Dusky Pink has been an on trend colour for the last few seasons. However some people are scared of colour on their walls so why not try it on the floor first. The beautiful colour will be the perfect antidote to the grey dark skies of winter.
Just under £200 this is another keenly priced rug, and measure 170x240cm. You can find this rug online – I may even be adding one to a basket myself.
So you have no excuse now for a cold dark interior over the winter months now. Whether you are a soft and fluffy rug lover, or you need some colour and pattern in your life one of these rugs will enhance your home.
