Pantone Colour of the Year 2021

Earlier today Pantone announced their colour of the year for 2021 – only being announced at the end of 2020 (what a year eh!) there were two colours; Illuminating, a lovely bright yellow, that is teamed with Ultimate Grey.

My initial thoughts? Well we all need some colour in our lives, especially as we head through the cold winter months. The bright yellow gets me thinking about the sunshine again, we are almost at the longest day so let us hope for more sunny days soon. I think combining it with a grey colour is clever, on it’s own either colour could have been too much – we especially don’t need another stand alone grey (or gray!) do we?

Pantone says the colours are ‘practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic’. This could be viewed as a very simple colour combination, but for many interiors it can also be seen as a good base. Add different tones of yellow, through to mustards, and you can create a classic theme – this colour combination reminds me of lovely colourful Scandinavian interiors.

Often the ‘colour of the year’ announcements are so bland – or so off the mark – that you couldn’t imagine decorating with them. By giving us two colours here that work perfectly together maybe Pantone are helping us along the way? The picture below certainly shows a whole range of shades and tones that could be used with Illuminating and Ultimate Gray.

So, love or loathe? Let me know your thoughts below …..
